"you didn't hear it?" Kisten asked actually feeling a little relieved. Trust his imagination to run away with itself. "Ah well then must be nothing." He told himself more than for Derek, but saying it aloud seemed more reassuring in some way.
Was the school south? Derek had asked, Kisten wasn't sure and had to take a moment to think about it. "Yeah I think so..." He replied thinking on it some more and it seemed to make sense, head south from where they were in the forest and they should be on the right path back to the castle. That was all well and good but didn't they need to know which way south was?
Kist was just about to ask Derek if he just so happened to have a compass in his pocket or something when the other boy extinguished the light from his own wand, held it in his palm and said 'point me'. Kisten watched in amazement as the wand span on Derek's palm until it settled pointing just off to the left of the path they were following. Of course there had to be a spell that would work like a muggle compass, why hadn't Kisten thought of that. Not that it would have been any good to him because he'd never seen nor heard of the spell before but it seemed rather useful to know.
"Have to remember that one." He muttered and continued to follow Derek on the slightly adjusted path hopefully heading in the right direction. But Kisten still couldn't shake the feeling that something else was following their path through the forest.

“Nope,” Derek answered quickly. His attention was on the path the wand was pointing. But, there was also a sudden increase in awareness as he was listening to his surrounding a little bit closer than he did earlier on. If Kisten had indeed heard something but Derek had missed it by being ignorant, he wanted to at least be on guard for what could possibly happen. The Forbidden Forest must have been forbidden for a reason and it was not to lure the students to venture into it for the sake of wanting to break a school rule or a dozen of it. “Huh?” Derek said, barely catching what Kisten was muttering as he was now taking a left towards the pointed direction and had let his mind wander off slightly. He needed time to gather his thoughts and when he did, he finally managed to sort out what Kisten was saying and had to suppress a chuckle as to how he could have missed a simple statement.
“Sorry, my mind was off,” Derek apologized swiftly but made gesture to stop or turn to face Kisten as he spoke. He was more concerned of getting them out of there alive rather than making sure he wasn’t being impolite. There will be other times in which he could find room to apologize. “Yeah, I found it when I was reading,” Derek stated, his hands was starting to hurt. Maintaining the spell was easy, the part where he need to hold the wand in place however, not so much. “The spell, I mean,” He added, clarifying what he had meant by his earlier statement. “Didn’t think it’d work either, haven’t had the time to practice it enough,” Derek continued with a hint of humour in his voice. The one spell he didn’t spend that much time on was the one that turned out to be easy for him to master. “Plus, I don’t make it a habit to get lost in the forest,” He added with a slight chuckle.

"Oh no problem, just me kinda rambling to myself anyway...tend to do that alot." Particularly when I'm nervous Kisten added silently to himself, it may have been obvious he was anxious and slightly afraid being lost in the forest, not to metntion quite natural really, but he also did have that Gryffindor streak of pride that wouldn't quite let him admit it aloud.
Found the spell while he was reading? That must mean Derek had been reading a spell book and not like a comic book or something, that was something Kisten would probably be more inclined to read, cracking the spell books generally only when he was in class or had homework due. Still if it cropped up useful little spells like that perhaps he should..."Might have to change my reading habits." Kisten admitted. He wasn't the most studious of people and wasn't afraid to admit it, he also knew that probably wasn't the best way to go about doing well at Hogwarts; especially when he felt behind the rest of his year group at the best of times.
That was it, if they managed to make it out of this forest alive he was going to change his habits and make a better student of himself....probably.
"Well looks to be working, we hope so anyway. Might be more dubious if it had told us to head in the opposite direction." Kisten frowned watching the wand quiver slightly and continue pointing steadily off in the direction in which they were heading. "Surely can't be that far out now, don't remember walking this far in."

“Don’t sweat it, I’ve been known to do that myself,” Derek stated with a small grin on his face. He remembered how he, too, had had the trouble of rambling a little too much when his mind could not keep up with his mouth. Majority of the time, it was when he was caught off guard. He was human after all. Looking around, he noticed how the forest was getting thinner and a wave of relief wash through him. Fewer trees meant that they were getting to the edge of the forest, maybe not that far off and the fog seemed to have lessened in comparison to where they were earlier. “Yeah, just don’t tell anyone that I read,” Derek joked, his eyes was still fixed on the path taken. “I have a reputation to uphold,” He added accompanied with a small laugh. Derek does read, it was just that he probably would never read as much as the average Ravenclaw. He had always preferred to get on hand experience with things. Reading can be good, but nothing can beat real experience and that much he was well aware of.
“I don’t either,” Derek confirmed, but, he was certain that a spell that simple couldn’t have gone wrong. After all, he had noticed earlier that the lines of trees were thinning. “But, the forest is not as thick as it was,” He added, pointing out the obvious fact. “Maybe it’s the wand pointing the safest way out,” Derek continued, trying to reason with the situation. There was no indication that the spell had gone wrong and there was nothing on the spell that he had read that stated it could point to the wrong direction.

Kisten laughed again, a little nervously. Why was it when you were afriad and trying so very hard not to appear that way things always seemed to be far funnier than you would find them under any other circumstance? "Yeah don't worry, the secret is safe with me as long as you suggest me some useful books." He replied, "Ones that aren't too heavy going mind you." not being a Ravenclaw himself Kisten was more one for the trial and error method.
As Derek spoke Kisten looked around them properly for the first time since they'd started walking. He'd beena little too distracted with trying to stick close to where Derek was leading them and forcing himself not to look over his shoulder too often for fear that something really was following them. So he actually took note of their surroundings, and Derek was right it seemed, the forest certainly didn't appear to be as thick as it had been back where they'd met. This to Kisten seemed like a good thing, surely it meant that they were indeed heading on the right path out of that place, but that horrible niggling little voice in the back of his mind kept asking what if they were just heading into a clearing or something...somewhere some kind of terrifying animal had decided to make his home.
He shook his head, quietly cursing his own runaway imagination. No we're heading on the right path, this is going to be the way out! "Yeah it's definitely not as dark or thick with plants and stuff anymore. Looks like people use this path is used more often than the other ones we were taking before." Kisten replied, happy to have quieted the voice in his head that had been niggling at him that they were wandering into danger. "I hope you're right."

Derek laughed, it was probably the best thing to do considering their current predicament, but he laughed anyway. Well, if they were going to be in deep trouble, he might as well laugh his way into it then fearing for his life. “Yeah, I’m sure I can find one or two easy books,” He stated still amused but his laughter had subside. As it should, the quietness filled in every now and then as Derek continued to follow the path the wand was leading them to. Where ever it was, he was hoping it was a way out. It could be the end of Hogsmeade or even running into the groundskeeper, either way; it would be great seeing they would be out. A way out was the only thing that Derek could think about that the thought of consequences left him completely. Derek could only nod when he heard Kisten spoke again, agreeing that the path looked used and well trodden compare to where they were earlier. At the back of his head he hoped that the increase number of worn out footsteps were signs of people getting out alive and not the other way around.
“Well, you and me both,” Derek stated, agreeing with Kisten’s last statement. There was nothing much they could do but Derek noticed a faint light a few meter away from where they were standing. It was either his mind playing tricks on him or it was the light from the gamekeeper hut. If it was the later, they are almost out of the wood. “There,” Derek stated, pointing toward the direction of the light. “Can you see that?” He asked, waiting for confirmation from Kisten that his mind was not playing tricks and that a way out was clear before them

The path they continued to follow remained well walked and even seemed to widen a little, the trees on either side of them not feeling so enclosed and oppressive, or maybe that was just Kisten being hopeful that they were indeed finding their way out. But no Derek seemed to think so too, and wherever they ended up really as long as it was out of that damn forest Kist didn't really care. It would be far easier to find their way back to the castle when they could see for certain where they were going.
When Derek stopped and pointed something out on the path ahead of them Kisten squinted and peered through the trees, following with his eyes where Derek was pointing. "Umm yeah I think so, looks like a light or something...it's kinda flickering could be candles or a lantern or something like that..." He replied wondering if they had just happened to find the way to the gamekeepers hut.

Derek was relieved when Kisten had confirmed that he too had seen what Derek had seen. So, it was not just his mind playing tricks on him. Then again, with the forest, Derek could never be sure as it was not a place he could fool around in. “Okay, here goes nothing,” Derek said, starting to walk again towards the direction where the light was. His ears were almost deafened by the sound of silence. Still, trying to console himself and telling his mind that it would be okay was not enough. Surely enough, soon after he found the way out was a bit more obvious. There were trodden path which was worn out by what he had assumed to be a number of people treating it like a road leading towards their destination. However, Derek kept his guard; they were not out of the woods yet, literally speaking in that matter. He kept his eyes open and ears alert, walking slowly and finally, the light was becoming clearer.
Soon, just soon enough about another two or three minutes slow walk, Derek noticed a smoke coming up followed by the sigh of the roof of which he was sure was the gamekeeper’s hut. “Finally,” He muttered under his breath, picking up speed and the hut was becoming clearer as the trees thinned out behind him. He wasn’t even sure if Kisten was still following him but he had hoped that Kisten was able to keep up.
