It was what you could say a normal evening for Ryder, all he did was think, and really go to class. He didn't talk much to anyone anymore, what was the point? When one friend is dead, the other a person that never stays around along long enough to talk to, pretty much like himself, anymore. He came, and gone, mostly do to stupid family reasons, over the period of times that he had disappeared from school. Ryder sometimes even wondered how he was even a Seventh Year with the amount of school he had missed, here at Hogwarts.
After dinner in the Great Hall, he found himself walking around the school not wanting or well really not ready to go back to the commons room, nor his dorm just yet. He wished to think someplace other than those. Because, really you didn't get the priavcy you wanted in any of those places, not that did you get it anywhere really, unless you really could get a moment alone. Ryder wasn't ready to grow up, and he knew this his own family knew this after throwing a fit about it. Though in the end of the fit, he knew that he could have to take the role as his family Head of House.
After graduation, his life as if it wasn't already at a one-eighty, it really was only just starting to be turned upside down. Weirdly enough he found himself in the place, since the time he began here in his fourth year just to see what it was like to be up so high, and a place to collect his thoughts really. That place was the roof, or the lounge either one it was he found himself standing on the roof, with the wind blowing somewhat hard, even for November. It had really only been three months since his father's death, yes it was unnerving just how much he missed his father, how also just how much he hated his father for everything that man had done to him.
Shaking his head, as the wind blow again, this time sending shivers down his spine caused by the cool November air. Ryder thought to himself, why the hell him. Why couldn't he have a older brother or at least something, he hated the fact that, he had to run a family at only the age of seventeen. HE HADN'T EVEN HAD A GIRLFRIEND for god sakes, he didn't know how his life would go or how it would true out. He hated all of it, but the sad thing was there was nothing he really could do about it.

A bored and rather lonely Sophia Davis was wandering the roof, really just sort of walking around. Her craziness had driven her to walk out of the dormitory in flop-flops even though she had managed to remember a jacket. It was November for Pete's Sake, and it was colddd! So why was she on the roof? Well, heat rises, doesn't it? Obviously, not tonight. It was quite chilly up here, none-the-less. Sophia hadn't seen anyone yet, not until she nearly ran into fellow seventh year, Ryder Kingsley.
"I'm sorry, Ryder." Sophia managed to give him a weak smile, Athradien quickly crossing her mind. For some reason she had to keep doing that to herself lately. Everytime she encountered someone of the opposite gender, she thought of Athradien. It was driving her crazy that she had to do so, but you know Sophia's one track mind was always on some boy, no matter who it was. She had hardly been able to wait for him to get back, almost getting back into a relationship with Zac Wood. Then suddenly he popped in and it was like BAM! HAPPINESS IS BACK!
But for now, she should be concentrating on her apology to Ryder, because she had in fact startled herself almost running to him. She, like most of the school, had heard of his father's death, but didn't know of the details. "Sorry about your Dad, Ryder. I know how it feels, I lost mine two years ago." Sophia swallowed, choking back the tears.

"I'm sorry, Ryder."
Ryder looked up from his own inflicted mirsey apon himself, and looked over to see Sophia standing nearly very close to him. Taking a step to the side, it had almost seemed she nearly ran into him. "Ah, its alright. There's nothing to be sorry about." There wasn't really, was there? Yes his father was dead, but he didn't care not at all. There wasn't a piece in Ryder that hurt over his death, just a torn that seemed to be pulled from his side. "Ah, at least you don't have to grow up all at once and become something you wished you hadn't until your like thirties." He said rambling a little as he stand up at the sky, which was dark and cloudy, only being able to see a few stars that were out.
"Sorry about your Dad, Ryder. I know how it feels, I lost mine two years ago."
Ryder smiled, sadly at the girl who stood next to him. He saw the tears she was choking back, he reached into his pocket for his handkerchief for her, which had a big K on the right coner. "Here, you seem to need it at the moment." He said with a sad smile. "Sorry to about your dad. You must have cared about him to get chocked up, wish it had been that way for me, maybe I would have that on my mind and not the furture." Ryder spoke with a sigh, he didn't...- he wasn't ready to give up his dreams for his family, but there was no other choice.
Ryder took a few steps to the side of the castle, and looked down. HE wasn't stupid he didn't want to end his life, he just wanted a way of getting out of being a Head of House so earlier, though he had thought of every way, he could have thought of and no matter what he would still have to become it after graduation.

"What do you mean when you say that you have to grow up so quickly?" Sophia asked, kind of shocked when he had told her there were no need for apologies. Of course there was a need for apologies, there always was, wasn't there? Aparently, Ryder didn't think so, so Sophia backed off and didn't insist upon it too much. "And yea, I miss my Dad a lot." She gratefully took the handkerchief off of his hands, wiping her eyes with it. She wasn't at all interested in being one of those gross people who blew their nose in someone else's handkerchief, so she dabbed her eyes and then handed it back to Ryder immediately.
"Well, I'm sorry about whatever it is that seems to be eating at you so hard." Sophia smiled weakly at him.

"What do you mean when you say that you have to grow up so quickly? And yea, I miss my Dad a lot."
Ryder sighed, "Once I graduate, I become the head of my house." Ryder sighed again it wasn't something he was ready for, nor wanted. "I would figure, many people do miss the that have passed on, I hated mine." He said trailing off into a whisper. He placed his handkerchief back into his pocket. What was a guy to do, he didn't know there was no way of getting out of this. Ryder know that for sure, because his mother told him. his grandmother, and his aunts told him. He was the only one because his father hadn't had a brother either so he was stuck being it. Being the person that would have to the play this role. IT was a role not wanted.
"Well, I'm sorry about whatever it is that seems to be eating at you so hard."
"Would you want your life taken, basically out of your hands? And told that you had to be in this role make some hard decisions one that you might never or might have to make in your life time? One before you are even ready." He spoke with a slight frown on his face, and he looked over the edge of the roof again, looking just how far it was down. With the lack of sleep, and everything else on his mind anymore it wasn't surprising that he hadn't got himself hurt. "Ones that you probably wouldn't have to even make until you were at least married. Here I sit before you, never really had much of a girlfriend, and probably not going to have much of a chance to after this, after school, so my life has came to a basic end after this year of school." He said with a hugh sigh.

Sophia had never really taken the chance to talk to Ryder and get to know him, and she had never known his family worked in such a way that the death of his father put him at Head of Household. "Wow, I'm sorry about that." It seemed as though Sophia was just throwing around the word sorry like a ragdoll, when really she meant every apology that spilt from her thin lips. "Why did you hate your father?" Sophia asked curiously, not exactly meaning to pry, but that is sort of what she was doing.
"Ryder, I'm sure that you can find someone who you like a lot and can settle down with before this year is over, and if you do so, can't you just tell your family no?" Sophia didn't really understand how the whole thing worked. She'd never heard of a family that worked in such a way, well she had, but she'd never met someone who had a family that worked in such a way, so she was taking the opportunity to learn a bit about it. "I mean like if you plan to marry her and have children with her, then can't being just a husband and a Dad be enough, or does your family require more of you?"

"Wow, I'm sorry about that. Why did you hate your father?"
Sorry. What was the point of that word, few meant what the said behind it, it really was just a word that didn't need to be spoken at all. Most didn't believe people when they said it, so why believe others when they said it. "It's okay." He sighed, what was the point he wasn't going to get out of it. "It's a long story and its late, I don't know if you want me to tell you." He looked over at her with a sigh, it really was a long story he guessed. Really it just seemed to be a long story, when really it wasn't much than maybe a few lines give or take how much he rambled about it.
"Ryder, I'm sure that you can find someone who you like a lot and can settle down with before this year is over, and if you do so, can't you just tell your family no?"
Ryder sighed, bring up what he had basically already thought of, but wouldn't get him out of having to be the head of household. Then again what girl would wanna be with a guy, that didn't know one thing how a girl acted when in love with him. Yeah he might have been somewhat of a ladies man, but he wasn't anymore not that he really ever was a ladies man to begin with. "Why would anyone wanna settle down after just a year, Sophia? And also with a guy that's not even had much of a girlfriend." Ryder sighed he didn't know what more eh could do with everything that had been given to him on his platter this year. "I've already tired that, there isn't another male in my family other than me. My father's sister's all had girls as first born. I am also my father's heir, so I don't have much of a choice." He sighed, what was a guy to do.
"I mean like if you plan to marry her and have children with her, then can't being just a husband and a Dad be enough, or does your family require more of you?"
"I've thought of that to, they would just tell me the same thing they told me when I said no." He said with a sad smile on his face, he really was screwed anyway he looked at this situation. "What they said basically was, it's your duty and privilege to become the head of the Kingsley's." He said not wanting to talk or say anymore along the lines of what they said. What Ryder really wanted was to have a life, before having to become this, but it looked like that wasn't going to happen.

"It's a long story and its late, I don't know if you want me to tell you."
"Well of course I want you to tell me. I don't believe I would have asked if I really didn't want to know. And the lateness doesn't bother me, I'm in the mood to break curfew." Sophia shrugged, looking up at him and hoping that he would actually tell her. What was the point in even asking if he hadn't planned on telling her anyway. Sophia really didn't mean to pry, but it seemed he was willing to talk. Heck, it sounded to her as if he needed someone to talk to, and no one really took the time to listen except for Sophia. That was her typically, the girl who sat around listening to everyone's stories.
Sophia then listened to his next thought, also wondering the same thing. Many girls wouldn't want to be with a guy and settle down after just a year, but you never know. Sometimes you can find that perfect one who would settle down and everything with you just to get you out of a crappy situation like that. "Maybe you'll meet a girl who wants you out of that situation as badly as you do, and she'll be glad to settle down early just for that." Sophia cocked an eyebrow at him. "Not all of us are patient, anyway. Heck, I'd rather settle down and get a good job right away so I can have my children and be a young parent." Sophia had always dreamed of being a young parent. Not too young of course, but not too old to play with her kids in the yard everyday.
"Well, tell them to take care of themselves. Times have changed, we're living in a time in which we don't have to stay around our families for our whole lives. We are allowed freedom." Sophia didn't want freedom though. At the moment, she would love to be with her family for the rest of her life, but that probably had more to do with the fact that she knew she couldn't do so considering both of her parents had died.

"Well of course I want you to tell me. I don't believe I would have asked if I really didn't want to know. And the lateness doesn't bother me, I'm in the mood to break curfew."
Fine, he thought not really caring she probably thin he was crazy after it. "Well, okay then..." He said trying to find the first place to start. "My parents marriage was arranged, and they had to marry. My father I guess never really liked my mother, nor did he wish to be with her. But, I guess he didn't have a way out of it either, like I don't this Head Of Household business." He stopped for the moment to think of all what his grandfather told him before he passed away in his fourth year, before he had came to Hogwarts. "They had me, and my father I guess thought he had done his job produced an heir, so he was never really around. Me and my mother had our own parts of the house, along with my father who had his own to. I rarely saw him, but when I did he was always teaching me how to be the proper young man I was to be, that I am. He never did it in the kindness way, nor was he very kind at all." He sighed, he hated his father. "I guess with the years, of his abesents I just sorta resent him for all that he was, and would even be. It wasn't as if he cared about me or anything. He knew his job was to produce an heir and he did." So that was basically Ryder's story. "Well, thats the most of the story I know, or at least was told." He sighed, looking up at the sky.
"Maybe you'll meet a girl who wants you out of that situation as badly as you do, and she'll be glad to settle down early just for that. Not all of us are patient, anyway. Heck, I'd rather settle down and get a good job right away so I can have my children and be a young parent."
"Unless its arranged like my parent's was, I doubt a girl going to want to be married at the end of the year. No matter how patient or impatient, she may be. I know I don't want to marry right out of school, I don't even want to become the head of the household at the end of this year." Taking his gaze from the sky, and over to her. Did she not see the point, why would a girl want to marry him, or even marry in a year. If no girl had wanted him before now, why would they want him now, and to marry at the end of the year. There was no hope for him, he didn't want to be like his father. He wanted to marry for love, and happiness. Not this and you might fall in love before a year, but you want to be sure before giving a person the ring, or anything like that.
"Well, tell them to take care of themselves. Times have changed, we're living in a time in which we don't have to stay around our families for our whole lives. We are allowed freedom."
Ryder shook his head, "I've been taking care of my mother for as long as I can remember, because my father was never around. I don't believe I could just abounden her and my grandmother to." He sighed, "My aunt they don't care they have there own husbands, but I am the only Kingsley left by name, so I have to take the rule as head of Household." Ryder sighed, want was he going to do.

As Sophia listened to Ryder telling her the story of why he hated his father so much, she realized that this whole thing seemed rather old fashioned. The whole arranged marriages and Head of Household thing was something she'd ready in fairy tales from long ago, but she'd never heard of an arranged marriage in this day and age. Sure, people from wealthy families married each other, but it was only because they couldn't appreciate people of any status but their own. It would be different in her situation, because Sophia technically didn't have a family wealthiness status anymore. She had her half of the inheritance and that was it. She didn't have a mother, or a father. Just an older brother who at least pretended to care for her.
"I don't know what to tell you Ryder." Sophia was done trying to push him to look at the bright side of things. He seemed like such a pessimist to her, but at least he was nice, right?

"I don't know what to tell you Ryder."
She didn't know what to tell him, he didn't know what to tell himself any longer either. Ryder sighed at just how badly he had become a pessimist, he didn't feel brave, nor did he really feel anything but sorrow anymore. The sorrow, for how his life had become, how it was never going to be the same, not really. Closing his eyes and tilting his head back, just to feel the nighttime wind on his skin. He didnt know what to say to her, it was sad really that he didn't but what more could he do. "You, don't I no longer do so either." Ryder sighed, what was he going to do with himself, what could he do to get himself back up to par. He didn't know, he really didn't.

"You have to look at the bright side of everything, Ryder. And I don't know how you're going to find a bright side in this terrible situation you're in. But you could at lesat try. Give it a push, an effort. At least for Athradien and I." Sophia gave him a pleading look, unable to get past the fact that her friend wouldn't push himself to see that happiness or the light in any of these things. He was pessimistic, whereas his friends were optimists, just wanting him to be happy. "All we want, Ryder, is for you to be as happy as possible in that terrible situation. You must come back to Hogwarts and work as you take care of your family, so Athradien and I will be able to spend time seeing you. Heck, maybe you'll meet someone here you never expected would view you like that or vice versa." Sophia shrugged. "You never know. You have to throw yourself out there, take a chance. That's what I did, and look where I'm at. Happy in love with your best friend."

Then again thoughts came to him thinking if Ath and Sophie together why hadn't anyone told him, or let alone them. He wasn't going to ask, if they didn't want Ryder to know then fine. He wouldn't know. "Yes the brighter things, I'll try." he said as he stood up and walked a bit to move his cold legs. Why did everything seem to come down on him, really why. Was it a sick joke that Merlin, himself was playing on him. He didn't know, not that he cared at the moment. "All we want, Ryder, is for you to be as happy as possible in that terrible situation. You must come back to Hogwarts and work as you take care of your family, so Athradien and I will be able to spend time seeing you. Heck, maybe you'll meet someone here you never expected would view you like that or vice versa." Ryder sighed, he very much doubted that, he did a lot. "I guess so, but I am not good at any subjects." He spoke softly. It was true he didnt ace, any thing in classes he didn't have a favorite subject, he just went to class because he knew he had to. He didn't want to come back to hogwarts, well he did but he didn't know as what or what he could do here. It wasnt that it mattered much. "You never know. You have to throw yourself out there, take a chance. That's what I did, and look where I'm at. Happy in love with your best friend."Was, that a confession of being in love with Ath, or were the dating? He didn't know nor would he ask, if the wanted him to know they would have already told him. "Yeah take a bloody chance." He muddered, he didn't care. His life would couplase on him. You think your own best friend would tell you he had someone new in his life, Ryder thought, then muddered again aloud. "I guess I was wrong." were it wasn't able to really be heard.

Sophia cocked an eyebrow at Ryder who was suddenly acting very strange. "Ryder, what is eating at you? You are suddenly acting very strange." Sophia listened when he spoke, not really sure what to say to him. She sighed as her eyes moved to the grounds and she scanned them momentarily. "Is it something I said? Something I did?" Sophia really had to know. She just couldn't sit here and allow him to brood on his own thoughts and not tell her what was up. For some reason he'd been acting very strange, to say the least. "And by the way, you are good at many subjects. You have seemed to excel in every class I have had with you, at least." Sophia nodded, her emerald green eyes looking into his brown ones. "Come on, cheer up." Sophia said, tugging on his arm slightly. "Please?"
