It was that time again. The time to get back to Hogwarts! Amber was jogging alongside her mother and older brother as they hurried through Kings Cross to get through to platform nine and three quarters.
“Geronimo!” Tom yelled as he hooked his feet to the bottom of the trolley and travelled on it for about a meter. He then put his feet back onto the ground, quickly going back into a quick walk.
“Tom, act your age,” Mrs Black told him, “and don’t yell. People will look.”
Amber believed that comment seemed pointless as people already stared at the screeching owl in the cage.
“Sorry mother,” Tom replied.
Amber smirked at her brother’s silliness.
“You’ve just graduated from Beauxbatons and still haven’t gotten a job,” Their mother said to Tom.
“That’s because I don’t know what I want to do!” Tom complained.
“Well then figure it out!”
“Can we not talk about this now? Let’s just get to the platform.”
Mrs Black shot him a disapproving look, but didn’t say anything.
Walking in silence for a couple more minutes, they arrived at the platforms nine and ten. Tom was the first there, so went through immediately. He disappeared in the blink of an eye. Then, Amber and her mother ran through the barrier together.
“Right, remember to behave,” Mrs Black said to her daughter as soon as they were through. She patted down Amber's hair, which Amber thought was useless, considering it was always flattened down.
“And remember to give pain to the first years,” Tom said.
“Tom!” Their mother exclaimed.
“Sorry mother,” Tom quickly said and went to looking around the crowded platform.
There was a short silence until their mother said, “We should probably get the things on the train.”
“Yes! I’ll get them on, Amsie!” Tom said to his sister taking hold of the trolley once more and went off to find a place to put it.
“You alright?” Mrs Black asked her.
“I’m fine mother. I’m in sixth year, I’ve done this before. Why are you nervous every time?” Amber asked.
“I’m not nervous,” Mrs Black insisted. It was obviously a lie and Amber rolled her eyes as she looked the other way.
Tom came back shortly afterwards with her owl.
“Here’s Snowy,” he said, passing the owl to Amber.
“Thanks,” Amber said. She wished she could call the owl something else now, but she named the owl when she was eleven and obviously had been using it ever since then. It seemed pointless to change it now.
“Do you have everything packed?” Her mother asked for the millionth time that week.
“Yes mother, everything,” Amber reassured her.
“Because I would hate to have to mail something to you. The owls are getting old and may not be able to go the dista-,”
“Mum!” Amber interrupted with an angry tone, “I have everything!”
Amber noticed her brother was once again interested in the surrounding people. Other students were giving their parents hugs and younger students with muggle parents were awkwardly standing around or looking at the place in awe. Suddenly, Amber felt pressure on her cheek and realised her mum had pulled out her handkerchief and was trying to rub something off.
“Mum!” Amber exclaimed in embarrassment.
Tom laughed, but Amber shot him an angry look and he quickly tried to cover it with a cough.
“You have something on your cheek…there we go!” Amber’s mum pulled away, looking happier.
“We should be off,” Mrs Black said, taking a quick look at her watch.
“Hey, Tom, where’d you put my bag exactly?” Amber asked her brother.
“Somewhere over there,” Tom said, waving his hand in the direction of the train. Amber glared at her brother, but Tom didn’t notice her.
“Your father will need his medication,” her mother said.
“Okay, I’ll see you at Christmas, maybe?” Amber said and gave her mother a hug.
“We’ll mail you about it,” her mother said, returning the hug.
“Yeah, or you can stay at Hogwarts and get up to some mischief!” Tom said, also giving his sister a hug.
“Oh my god, Tom! Get off me!” Amber said, pushing him away.
“Fine then!” Tom said, looking hurt, “I won’t ever hug you again.”
“That’s what you said last time,” Amber replied, amused.
“Okay sweetie, bye! Have fun!” Her mother said turning around and walking off.
“Yeah, see ya!” Tom said.
“But Tom, you never said where you left my bag!” Amber yelled at her brother, but they already had gone through the barrier back to the muggle world.
Amber angrily started to search for her bag, attempting to get through the crowded platform. She had left her robes at the top of her bag to take out earlier, but she forgot and thus had to find it. She pushed past people in a rather rude manner, just giving them pushes and sending them tripping over and such. This, of course, was a bad idea. Mainly because Karma was an annoying person and everyone seemed to hate her. Amber spotted her luggage and started to walk over to it, starting to go into a fast paced walk. She had a clear path until someone’s luggage fell into her way.
The following event was possibly the most embarrassing in her life. Amber successfully side stepped the luggage, however she fell onto someone else’s luggage, promptly causing it to fall over. She fell over with it and then rolled off and smacked face down onto the ground. Amber sincerely hoped that no one had seen, but the sound of laughter told her otherwise. Amber was too petrified to get up, but with all her courage, she brought her head up and blew random strips of hair out of her face. Then, Amber decided it was best to confidently stand up and did so. She looked towards where her luggage was – it hadn’t moved. She took a step towards it, but from her fall had developed a sore ankle. Under her body weight, her ankle gave in and she once again fell to the floor. Totally giving up on walking, Amber started to pull herself across the floor with her arms, the expression on her face full of determination, not caring what the surrounding people were thinking of her.
