One of the best things about owl post, in Lexi's opinion, was that she could send letters to her father even when he was out at sea on one of his fishing trips. He worked as a trawler man and so could spend long weeks out at sea where she wouldn't see or hear hide nor hair of him and given he was her only parent, that tended to worry Lexi somwhat.
Since coming to Hogwarts however she discovered there could be some comfort found in sending him an owl and receiving a reply assuring her of his safety. He'd occassionally had to explain away a few owl sightings by the other crew members, but to reassure his daughter he'd told her he was happy to make up excuses. His replies tended to be a rough and quickly scratched sentence or two, but that was good enough for her to know he was still alive and well.
He'd set off on his latest trip not long after he'd seen Lexi onto the Knight Bus to Hogwarts so Lexi headed to the owlery to send him the lastest letter she'd written. Nothing very exciting really considering the term hadn't quite begun yet, but she wrote what she could and had somehow stretched it out to a full roll of parchemnt.
She scanned the rows of nests that were set into the tall, circular room's walls and picked out a school owl to send. She tended to go for the larger, more sturdy looking owls, thinking they could probably cope with flying out to sea somewhat better than the smaller ones could. It had served her well so far. Selecting one the schools fine looking eagle owls Lexi tempted it down with some owl treats and attached the letter to its outstreched leg.
Her father had offered to buy her an owl before her second year began, but Lexi had changed her mind at the last minute and chosen to get her tabby cat, Hamish, instead. She adored him so much, and while an owl would have been a very practical and lovely pet to have, she now couldn't imagine being without her cat so the school owls would suffice.
"There, now I think I've sent you before," she said to the owl as it gripped her arm and she wandered over to one of the open archways. "So you know what boat to look out for, right?" The owl hooted softly back at her before it took off into the bright blue sky. "And don't forget to wait for his reply." She called out after the slowly shrinkling shape in the sky. Then she glanced around feeling a little embarassed, surely she wasn't the only one who spoke to the owls like they could understand you right?
