Ian climbed up to the Owlery to see his parents' owl, which was staying the night tonight because he had no mail to send back home. The owl really wasn't needed, because both of parents worked at the school and he saw them everyday, but they'd had him for a long time and he needed something to do to keep from getting too bored. So, Warwick would carry mail that Ian could easily deliver himself. He didn't mind though. If it gave the owl a sense of meaning, then who was he to take it away.
When he got to the top of the stairs and opened the door, a few pieces of hay fell out of the doorway. He stepped in and was immediately hit with a terrible stench. Someone hadn't bothered to clean the place in a pretty long time it looked like. There were pellets everywhere and a few owl making more in the far corner. "Well..." he said. He hadn't been up here yet, but he didn't think he would come back except for a few times to give Warwick treats. The owl usually stayed at their house, but he was staying here in case Ian had mail tomorrow. So, he brought him a few owl treats. It was really the least he could do.
He found Warwick over on the far left wall and took him on his arm. "Hey there little fella" he smiled. "I brought you something." He put the small treat up to Warwick's mouth and watched as he devoured it. He must have been pretty hungry. They fed them every day, but the food probably wasn't all that great. A treat every once in awhile couldn't hurt. He looked around and saw that most of the owls had left for the night. There were probably less than 50 left. With all of the students at Hogwarts, that was a tiny amount. Ian found a chair that wasn't covered with hay or pellets and sat down, looking out of the tower's window at the night sky. It was really nice tonight.

Saul was heading up to the owlery late one evening with the intent of sending a letter to his father. It had been a few weeks since he'd last written (not counting the year or so it had been since he'd actually seen him) and even though he knew his Dad wasn't easily able to write a reply Saul still felt better if he kept the man updated with things going on in his own life. Starting Hogwarts was quite a major thing to tell, and complain, about.
His mother had let Saul and his half-sisters bring Lysander, one of her Eagle owls, with them to Hogwarts for sending letters so Saul was heading up in search of him. He pushed open the door into the high, circular tower and was instantly hit with the most awful smell. "Oh, wow, smells like something died in here!" He exclaimed, pinching his nose and heading inside.
He began to hurriedly scan the nests along the walls in search of Lysander, most of them already empty, and he began to think he'd come too late and his letter would have to wait until the morning. It was only then that he noticed another boy sitting on one of the chairs looking out of the window. Saul hadn't realised he wasn't alone in the owlery and he said, "Sorry, didn't realise anyone else was in here. I don't normally talk to myself...well not all the time...Um you haven't spotted and Eagle owl with a green tag on it's leg while you've been in here have you?"

Ian turned around when he heard the door open. People didn't usually come up to the Owlery. It was a bit too...smelly. But when people needed to send letters, they did come to find their owls up here. The boy seemed to be searching for an owl to use. He would have said hello or at least make his presence clear, but he didn't want to startle his classmate, so he just waited. When Saul finally did see him, Ian chuckled a bit when he apologized for talking to himself. "Don't worry about it. I've been talking to my owl for about 10 minutes, so I guess we're even."
"I don't think I've seen an eagle owl, although there have been a few owls in and out while I've been looking out the window so I suppose one could have flown in over the past few minutes." He scanned the room for a few seconds just to make sure that he had remembered correctly. "Probably just went out to find food. Warwick does that every once in awhile at night." Sometimes the owl just lived off of treats, but if he was feeling adventurous, he would swoop down to the grounds to grab a mouse or a few insects.
"I'm Ian, by the way" he said, extending his hand. He had seen the boy around class, but he wasn't sure that he had ever heard him speak. He could appreciate that though. There were a few people in his classes that he wished would talk a little less. "What year are you?" he asked. The boy looked to be about the same age as him, so he thought he was probably a first or second year, but you could never really be sure.

Saul laughed slightly as Ian spoke of talking to his owl for the past ten minutes, yeah he supposed that was kind of on par with talking to yourself. "Yeah sounds about even." He agreed with a nod.
He carried on scanning the nests for a moment, but when the Ravenclaw mentioned that he'd not noticed an eagle owl anywhere during the time he'd been there Saul gave up and tucked the letter into the pocket of his school robes. "Oh well, he's probably headed out for the night then, both Mum's owls usually spend all night away from their roost guess its no different being here. Will have to send my letter in the morning I guess." Saul sighed slightly as he brushed the dry matter off one of the other seats, wiping his hand on his robes afterwards, and took a seat. "Knew I should have come up here earlier."
Ian introduced himself, Saul recognised the boy from some of his classes of course, but couldn't have been sure of his name. "Right, Ian, yeah. I've seen you in some classes, I'm Saul nice to actually meet you." He said offering a hand to shake. "I'm a first year," He answered with a shrug, "And you?"

"Yeah, the owls tend to always be gone when you need them most" he said, shrugging. It was like they could sense when you were walking up to the Owlery and they took off to avoid the work. But what was the point of having an owl if it was never there when you needed it? Perhaps that's why he had a cat. No...the reason he had a cat was that his parents wouldn't let him have an owl. The family owl was alright though, and he didn't need it much anyway.
Ian had seen Saul in a few of his classes as well, and it was nice to finally meet him. There were so many people in his classes that he just never had the chance to talk to. He was actually surprised at how nice Saul was being, considering he was a Slytherin. Maybe Slyhterins just got a bad rap. After all, his father had been in Slytherin and he wasn't so bad. Of course, he wasn't any Slytherin. Ian had been born to a Slytherin and a Gryffindor. He thought surely that was against some kind of unwritten code.
"I'm a first year too. Still getting used to the castle, but I've been up here a few times. There's not usually anyone here, so it's a nice place to just kind of get away from it all, you know?" He looked out the window one more time and nodded. "The school is nice, but every once in awhile it would be good to get out." He couldn't wait until he was a third year and would be allowed to go to Hogsmeade. He watched all of the older kids coming back with candy and presents for their significant others. Meanwhile, he was cooped up in the school all the time. He was only eleven, but he felt like he could fend for himself just the same.

"I know, it's typical. Like they don't actually want to do their jobs. Why else does anyone have an owl if not for sending letters? I mean they're not exactly cuddly pets or anything, not really..." Saul shrugged it was a mystery that he probably would never know an answer to. Perhaps it was the owls own protest to their lives of servitude to wizards or something....who knows.
"Yeah the school's ok I suppose. It's actually starting to grow on me now. Wasn't too keen on coming here to start with, had been signed up to go to Durmstrang since I was born but I had to move back over here with Mum while Dad....um, well sorted some business and stuff out. Meant we couldn't stay there anymore...." Saul shrugged. He didn't know any of the specific details of what his fathers 'business' involved, he only knew it had led to his father disappearing and he and his mother fleeing the country to go live back in England with his half-sisters.
He also was pretty sure he shouldn't be talking about that much and so moved the subject on. "Yeah it would be nice to get away for a while though. I mean living in the castle is better than being at home as my half-sisters are in a different house so they can't bother me all the time but, being able to go out to the village over the weekends would be nice."
