The lawns were empty. No surprise there. Brian's job had long ago sputtered to a halt. He hadn't been to work in over a year, and even if he'd shown up, there would have been no students to teach. He wasn't sure why parents were keeping their kids away, but over the course of a few years, the slow outward trickle had left the staff stunned. Such a historic institution reduced to nothing more than a dusty collection of hallways. Brian hadn't even been in the castle since his last meeting, years ago. He was too afraid of the nostalgia. To think, the place was bustling with activity when he was a student... which wasn't THAT long ago, right? Surely he wasn't that old. But the absence of life did not lie. The place was dead, and no one was attempting to resurrect it.
He sped up to a jog, grabbed hold of a low hanging branch, and swung into a hole. But not just any hole. This hole led to a very special hole home. He and Emily had built the structure probably fifteen years ago. Fifteen years. Time flew by. Inside was a television, a sofa, and a few scattered chairs. He no longer even recognized the television. It had been covered in sediment, and the remote was nowhere to be found. Of course, he couldn't use a television with no remote. So he sat down in one of the chairs and stared at the dirty set. It didn't work, but his fuzzy imagination started to see a few memories flashing across the screen. They were all long gone and so too were the people in them. Jadeian, Emily, Kelsey, Arri, and Emma. People he hadn't seen in what seemed like forever.
He remembered dances, pillow fights, adventures. He probably exaggerated the extent of those adventures in his mind. Everything always seemed more harrowing as a kid. He could see the three of them chasing leprechauns around the wishing well. Had that even happened? He didn't know, but it was more fun to remember it as if it had. He remembered throwing water balloons at unsuspecting first years. He remembered messy breakups. Life was incredibly boring now, compared to the glory days. He would have to think of something to do that would bring back a few of the black hairs on his head. He felt like they were graying too quickly.
